About The Boat Box Hot Spring

The distinctive feature of the Boat Box Hot Spring, and the origin of its name, is the actual “boat box” itself.

This is a large metal tub, reminiscent of an old-fashioned soaking tub, placed right beside the river.

The origins of this tub are a bit of a mystery, but local lore suggests that it was placed there several decades ago by an unknown person or group.

The idea was simple yet ingenious: the tub captures the naturally hot water, creating a perfect soaking spot with stunning views of the river and surrounding wilderness.

Getting to Boat Box Hot Springs

Boat Box Hot Springs is located in Idaho, near the Salmon River.

If you’re coming from Stanley, you’ll need to head north on Highway 75 for about 5 miles until you reach a turnoff for Forest Road 208.

Once you turn onto Forest Road 208, you’ll need to drive for another 4 miles until you reach the trailhead.

Parking and Accessibility

Parking at Boat Box Hot Springs can be a bit tricky, especially during peak season.

There is a small parking lot at the trailhead, but it fills up quickly.

If the parking lot is full, I’d recommend coming back another day. The road is too dangerous to park on the side of it.

The trail to Boat Box Hot Springs is relatively short, but it can be steep and rocky in places.

It’s not recommended for those with mobility issues or young children.

If you do decide to make the hike, be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water.

Best Times to Visit

When planning a trip to Boat Box Hot Springs, it’s important to consider the best times to visit.

Here are some seasonal and weekday/weekend considerations to help you plan your trip.

Seasonal Considerations

Boat Box Hot Springs can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall, I went in August, and it was incredible, but a bit busy.

During these times, the weather is mild, and the crowds are smaller, making for a more peaceful and relaxing experience.

In the summer months, the hot springs can get crowded, especially on weekends.

If you do visit during the summer, we recommend going early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the crowds.

During the winter months, the hot springs can be more difficult to access due to snow and ice.

If you do plan to visit in the winter, make sure to check road conditions and bring appropriate gear, such as snowshoes or crampons.

Weekday vs. Weekend

If possible, I’d recommend visiting Boat Box Hot Springs on a weekday rather than a weekend.

The hot springs can get crowded on weekends, especially during the summer months.

Visiting on a weekday allows you to avoid the crowds and have a more peaceful and relaxing experience.

If you visit during the week, you may be able to take advantage of lower prices on lodging and other activities in the area.

Safety and Etiquette

I know it’s boring, but it’s important to keep some safety tips in mind.
